Anthropology Program
Anthropology Program
Degrees: The Undergraduate Program in Anthropology offers a Major and a Minor, and the opportunity to graduate with Honors, with either a BA or BS degree.
Careers: A degree in anthropology prepares students for careers in the public and private sector, as well as for specialized graduate studies toward research, academic, and professional engagement.
Advising: General advising is provided by the Program Chair--rotated yearly--whose name and contact information is available on the SAC Department website (see Programs/Undergraduate/Anthropology Major):
Anthropology majors become eligible for personalized curricular advice by registering with a Faculty Mentor, that is, with a member of the Anthropology Faculty with whom they have successfully taken at least one class, and whose interests and specializations match theirs.
Student Activities: Anthropology majors can join the "Emu sapiens" interest group, and/or the "Anthropology Honors Society"--the EMU chapter of the Lambda Alpha National Collegiate Honors Society for Anthropology.
The Faculty Sponsor of both groups is Dr. L (liza.cerroni-long@emich.edu), who also serves as CMS Grad. Cert. Adviser.
Since September 2017 the requirements have changed as follows:
Major Requirements: Completing the Major in Anthropology requires taking a number of required and restricted (ie, chosen from an approved list) anthropology courses, for a total of 33 credit hours, as follows:
Several Minors combine well with the Anthropology Major, and the SAC Department also offers two Interdisciplinary Minors which ideally complement all our majors.

PROGRAMMATIC DEVELOPMENTS
With the hiring of Dr. Maria Luz Garcia, in Fall 2014, our program has now faculty specializing in each of the traditionally recognized subfields of anthropology, and some of their sub-branches as well. Majors should consult the following list (given alphabetically) in applying to register with a Faculty Mentor (which should be done by the end of their 1st year at EMU):
Dr. Liza Cerroni-Long (cultural & museum anth.)
Dr. Brad Ensor (archaeology & physical anth.)
Dr. XiangHong Feng (cultural & applied anth.)
Dr. Maria Garcia (cultural & linguistic anth.)
Dr. Megan Moore (physical & forensic anth.)
The Faculty Mentor becomes a student's personal Major's Adviser, and will give the Exit Interview all majors need to graduate!

Since Fall 2012 the SAC Dept. offers an Interdisciplinary Graduate Certificate in Cultural Museum Studies (CMS). This was established and is coordinated by Dr. L, to whom all related questions should be sent (liza.cerroni-long@emich.edu).
